Institute of Veterinary Biological Products
- Institute of Veterinary Biological Products, Aundh, Pune-7 is the only state level institute producing vaccines for domestic animals and birds in Maharashtra under Department of Animal Husbandry.
-
This organization has been working since 1960 in Aundh area of Pune. The institute manufactures bacterial vaccines, viral vaccines, reagents and solutions for domestic animals and birds. These vaccines are supplied free of cost to all veterinary institutions across the state, to vaccinate the livestock of farmers and livestock owners.
- Vaccines produced in this institute are provided free of cost to all state level and zilla parishad veterinary institutes.
This organization is regulated under the following Acts.
- The Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 and 1945 (Amended)
- Factories Act, 1948
- Boiler, Smoke and Nuisance Act 1912.
- Petroleum Act, 1934
- Bombay Labor Welfare Fund Act, 1977.
- The Central Sales Tax (Registration and Turnover) Rules, 1957.
- Biomedical Waste Management Rules under Environment Protection Act, 1998.
- CCSEA – (Committee for Control and Supervision of Experimentation on Animals, Government of India) Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act-1960, Breeding and Experimentation on Animals (Control and Supervision) Rules 1998.
-
As all the vaccines are manufactured as per the conditions prescribed in Schedule-M of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act-1945 After the vaccines are manufactured, all types of tests are strictly conducted quality control laboratories before distribution. Due to this scientific and systematic methodology, this institute is considered as one of the renowned institutes in the country.
Vision
To make the state of Maharashtra self-sufficient in livestock vaccine production.
Objective/Mission
To provide quality veterinary biological products to the livestock owners of the state and to increase the production of milk, meat and eggs from livestock and poultry by keeping the livestock disease free in the state and thereby increasing the income of the livestock owners.
Bacterial Vaccine Production Laboratory
- Presently, this organization has adopted fermenter technology since 2014 for bacterial vaccine production and since then has started vaccine production process regularly as per standards of good manufacturing practices.
- With this fermenter technology, only one (campaign based) bacterial vaccine production is carried out at once. This way throughout the year the production of bacterial vaccines such as H.S., B.Q., ET and Salmonella Colour Antigen is undertaken.
- The vaccine quantities are produced as per the requirements from field officers.
- Previously from once batch of vaccine production, the institute could produce only 50000 doses whereas now with the use of fermenter technology, this capacity is increased to750000 doses in one batch of vaccine. At present, the production capacity of this project is about 1 crore doses of bacterial vaccines on an average.
- Also, due to this technology, the dose of vaccine in animals is reduced from 5ml to 2ml.
Poultry and Viral Vaccine Production laboratories
- Since 2009, the Department of Food and Drug Administration had suspended the vaccine production of these laboratories due to non-compliance with the standards of GMP.
- However, construction of new laboratories under the funds received under Rashtriy Krishi Yojana is completed .Under this project, production of poultry vaccines and viral vaccinse has been started in two different buildings.
- For the production of viral vaccines, all the standards of ideal production system have been adopted throughout the process right from selection of fertile eggs to the final production with the use of fully automated and semi-automated machineries.
- This project has increased the production capacity of poultry and viral vaccines by 5 times (i.e. 12.50 crore vaccines) as compared to earlier.
Small Animal Breeding Center (SABC)
- In SABC, all the laboratory animals (white mice, rabbits, and guinea pigs) are produced and reared.
-
This section supplies laboratory animals (mice, rabbits, and guinea pigs) as well as large laboratory animals (buffalo Males, goats, sheep), poultry and SPF eggs etc. required for vaccine production and testing and quality control processes. Also, the department has CCSEA license to sell small laboratory animals. Accordingly, in addition to the use of IVBP, DIS, additional laboratory animals are sold to CCSEA registered institutions.
- SABC operates under the control of the Institutional Animal Ethics Committee (IAEC), CCSEA, and protocols for the use of laboratory animals required in the
development of various vaccines are approved by the Institutional Animal Ethics Committee. - Large animals (buffalo Males, goats, sheep), required for vaccine production and testing and quality control process are obtained from Maharashtra Livestock Development Board and rehabilitated back to the farm after the experiment.
Testing and Quality Control Laboratory
In this laboratory, the media, chemicals and other materials being used for vaccine production are tested for quality. Similarly after production of vaccines before supplying them the field level, the vaccines are tested and quality is checked in this laboratory.
