    Quality Control Laboratory, Goregaon, Mumbai

    In 1984, during reorganization of the Department, the former Animal Nutrition Research Center and Quality Control Laboratory, Aarey, Goregaon (East) Mumbai-65 were merged together to form the Quality Control Laboratory, Goregaon, Mumbai-65. Deputy Commissioner, Quality Control Laboratory has been declared as the head of this institution.

    Functions

    Quality Control Laboratory

    As per the government of resolution No. Astha / 2075/6535/ADM/Dt. 14.04.1977, before export of animal originated products, quality inspection of these products is carried out at Quality Control Laboratory through parasitic, microbiological and biological testing. Animal products exported from India include frozen beef, mutton, chevon, carcasses, eggs and other animal originated products. As per the guidelines of GoI, a policy of issuing certificates, after testing of meat and animal products as per Notification of the Director General of Foreign Trade Ministry of Commerce No./ETC (PEN)92/17, dated 31.03.1993, has been formulated. These certificates are being issued presently through this organization. Also, as per Government resolution No.Miscellaneous/10/2002/P.No.41/Krishi Padum/Ministry, dt.22.01.2003, the work of inspection of non-edible animal products, not used for human consumption, is also assigned to Quality Control Laboratory. Earlier this work was done by Mumbai Veterinary College. In order to prevent the entry of dangerous diseases in India through the import of animal products, they need to be tested for bacterial/viral/parasitic contamination. For this purpose, the right to collect samples of imported animal originated products at the international airports and ports of the state and inspect them has been awarded to this institute as per Government resolution No.DIS10/2001/ 21413/P.No./218/Padum Mantralaya dt. 09.08.2001.

    Procedure

    After the application form of the exporter is received in the office, the material is classifies as frozen meat, miscellaneous, non-edible products, eggs etc. It is also checked whether the application contains information such as number of cartons, average weight of cartons, which country the goods are to be exported to etc. In case of frozen meat, other documents along with the application form are checked and returned back. After application form inspection, as per the order of Deputy Commissioner, Quality Control Laboratory, Aarey, Goregaon, Livestock Development Officer visits the exporter's company to check the temperature of the cold storage, cleanliness and activities of the processing plant, carton number and packing, inventory of goods etc. After that, random samples of the cartons are collected and brought to Quality Control Laboratory for microbial/parasitic/biological examination. The samples are then subjected to (1) Parasitic (2) Microbial (3) Biological testing. Only after comparing the results to the standard values, the quality control laboratory certifies that meat and animal products are fit for export
